What Are EN / ASTM / CPSIA?

Why Parents Should Understand Them Before Choosing Toys?

When choosing wooden toys for your child,
you may notice letters like EN, ASTM, or CPSIA on the product page.

They may look technical,
or even a little confusing at first.
But in fact, they are closely connected to what every parent cares about most —
your child’s safety, health, and peace of mind during playtime.

Today, we’d like to explain these three common toy safety standardsin a simple and gentle way.

What Is the EN Standard?

EN refers to European toy safety standards,
with EN 71 being the most common one.
It applies to all toys sold in the European market.

In simple terms, EN focuses on three key questions:

  • Could the toy cause injury during play, such as cuts, pinching, or choking?
  • Are the materials safe and environmentally friendly?
  • Is the toy truly suitable for the intended age group?

When a toy passes EN testing,
it means its design, materials, and safety details
meet Europe’s strict requirements for children’s products.

For wooden toys,
this standard is especially important.

What Is ASTM?

ASTM standards are developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
In the toy industry, the most common one is ASTM F963.

It is a key requirement for toys sold in the U.S.

ASTM focuses on real-life use
how toys perform when children play with them every day, such as:

  •  Whether the toy breaks easily
  • Whether it remains safe after drops and pulling
  • Whether paints and surface coatings are safe
  • Whether there are choking or entanglement risks

In short, ASTM asks one important question:
Can this toy stay safe during real childhood play?

What Is CPSIA?

If ASTM focuses on testing,
then CPSIA is a legal requirement.

CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act)
is a mandatory safety law for children’s products in the U.S.

It strictly limits:

  • Lead content
  • Harmful chemicals such as phthalates
  • Requires clear product traceability, including production information

Any product designed for children 12 years old and under
must comply with CPSIA regulations.

Why Do These Standards Matter to Parents?

As parents,
we may not remember the full names of these standards,
but we all care about the same thing:

Can my child play safely and confidently?

These standards exist not to complicate things,
but to help identify and remove potential risks
before a toy ever reaches your child’s hands.

At Guanyi, we firmly believe:
Safety always comes first.

Because only safe toys can truly supporthappy, healthy childhood moments.
